Five Pocket Pants for Men

As the name suggests, these are trousers with five pockets: two slanted pockets at the front, two at the back and a small coin pocket at the front right. That last pocket is a leftover from the days when men carried a pocket watch, usually attached to the trousers with a chain. Most jeans follow this model, and it is now so common that you see it on almost every classic pair of jeans. Besides denim, five-pocket trousers are also made from chino fabric.

The history of the five-pocket trouser

The riveted work trouser was patented in 1873 by Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis, intended for men in heavy industries such as mining and the railways. Those first trousers still had four pockets; the fifth, the second back pocket, was added around 1901 and completed the model as we know it today. Nowadays five-pocket trousers come in a wide range of fits, colours and finishes, usually with some elastane (stretch) in the fabric for extra comfort.
